There are online code repositories that were made specifically for open source development. I recommend those instead of Dropbox.

I'm gonna be working with GML, which in many cases should one giant file that contains everything - sprites, code, music, etcetc. Not that I know the upsides to google code or github, but I believe dropbox will be more convenient for me as I already use it quite a bit.

Hey, Game Maker Studio can do collab tools so I upload each revision on GitHub.
You should specify it's GM8 and not GML since GM:S can use Git and SVN.
