Ok, lets talk seriously real quick.
Videogames as a genre have been moving back. I am seeing this everywhere.
Look at this:
Arcade > Platform > Fighting > Racing > FPS > 3D < FPS < Racing < Fighting < Platform < Arcade.
The peak hit near 2003-2007 with 3D adventure games, and now the genre is moving back again. FPS games are starting to die and won't be as common in the following years, and there will be more Racing or Fighting games.
We are currently in between the FPS / Fighting time. When FPS and fighter games begin to die, platforming will take over again. Get it?
What I'm saying here is plan when to release your games, and know where the flow is moving.
In the media, we are going into the Racing / Fighting Era.
In the indie side, we have pushed into the Platformer / Arcade Era.
What indies and the media need to do to succeed is remember this line. History likes to repeat it's self. It goes forward then bounces back. It's the same with everything.
